Little Explorers, Big Adventure: A Kids' Themed Photoshoot in the Munich Botanical Garden

A themed photoshoot for little explorers in the Munich Botanical Garden – with binoculars, a magnifying glass and a safari look, we capture natural, lively children's photos, weatherproof and surrounded by nature.

Two little explorers stand on a rock, binoculars pressed firmly to their eyes, while towering cacti rise into the sky above them. „Over there, do you see it?" – and the older one points the way for the little one. That exact moment, when both children forget the camera completely, is why I love to stage a kids photoshoot in Munich as a little adventure. In the Botanical Garden, a photo session turns into an expedition – and wide, wondering children's eyes give me the most honest images of all.

Why a themed shoot works so well with children

Children don't pose. The moment I ask a child to stand still and smile into the lens, the gaze freezes and the real laughter disappears. So I flip it around: instead of an instruction, the children get a task.

For this explorer photoshoot the two had binoculars, a magnifying glass and a compass with them – and suddenly it wasn't about being photographed anymore, but about searching, peering and finding. The children are „working", they forget the camera, and I get exactly what parents come to me for: natural, candid children's photos instead of stiff, forced smiles.

This playful approach is the heart of my family photography – I don't chase the perfect shot, I capture the real moments that happen in between.

The Munich Botanical Garden – my insider tip for children's photos

The Botanical Garden is one of my favourite settings for a kids photoshoot in Munich. Between the palm house, jungle greenery and the cactus house it feels like a journey to faraway lands – exotic, without you having to travel anywhere.

Two arguments win parents over again and again:

  • Weatherproof: The greenhouses are pleasantly warm. Whether it's raining, stormy or a grey midwinter day outside – inside it stays green and sheltered.
  • Green all year round: While the rest of Bavaria is bare in November, here everything blooms and thrives throughout the year. So you're not tied to the few sunny summer weeks.

Especially with small children, that takes a huge amount of pressure off. We never have to cancel a session just because a rain shower is forecast.

Safari look: props and styling that match the setting

A little preparation with the styling makes a big difference in the end. For this themed shoot I coordinated a small „safari look" with the parents: earthy tones, khaki, natural colours that blend harmoniously into the garden's greenery.

The props can happily be real and actually used – binoculars, a magnifying glass, a small compass or a hand-drawn treasure map. They're not just decoration but the tools that give the children their role as explorers. Anything too loud or too costume-like I leave at home – nature should play the lead, not the outfit.

Siblings: when a relationship becomes visible

The loveliest part of the day was the interaction between the two children. The older one shows the little one where to look. Together they lean over the magnifying glass. One discovers something, the other marvels along.

These are the moments that tell not of faces, but of a relationship. A good sibling shoot doesn't capture how neatly two children can stand side by side, but how they treat each other – the teasing, the pointing, the shared laughter. For parents these images often become the most precious later on, because they show who their children really were.

Practical tips for your kids photoshoot

To make the day relaxed for everyone, I always share a few simple recommendations with parents beforehand:

  • Best age: From around three years old, themed shoots work particularly well because the children understand the task and join in. But we find a way with younger ones too.
  • Clothing in calm colours: Earthy, natural tones, no big logos or neon. That keeps the focus on their faces.
  • Plan snacks & breaks: A little hunger can flip any mood. Biscuits and water work wonders – breaks are always part of my plan.
  • Choose the time of day wisely: Weekday mornings are when the Botanical Garden is emptiest. Fewer visitors means more calm and a clear backdrop.
  • A favourite prop from home: A familiar cuddly toy or their own binoculars melt away shyness and bring an instant, genuine smile.

If you'd like to see what this relaxed approach looks like outdoors, take a look at my family photoshoot in an apple orchard – same philosophy, different setting.

Frequently asked questions about a kids photoshoot in Munich

How much does a kids photoshoot in Munich cost?

That depends on the duration, the location and the number of edited images. You'll find my current packages clearly listed on my pricing page.

How long does a kids photoshoot take?

For children I deliberately plan enough time, usually around 60 to 90 minutes. That leaves room for breaks without any rush – pressure is the biggest enemy of genuine children's photos.

From what age does a kids photoshoot make sense?

An explorer-themed shoot works best from about three years old. In principle I photograph children of any age – I simply adapt the flow.

What if my child doesn't want to join in?

That's completely normal and no problem at all. I never work with force, only with patience and play. Often that initial reluctance is forgotten after a few minutes – and the loveliest images happen all on their own.
