Family Photoshoot in Munich's Old Town: Fun, Relaxed and Real

Why Munich's old town is the perfect place for a relaxed family photoshoot – with honest tips on staying at ease so genuine moments can happen.

There's a moment, right before I press the shutter, when a family stops posing and simply starts being. That's exactly why I love a family photoshoot in Munich's old town: among the old façades, cobblestones and warm afternoon light, the tension melts away fast. It's allowed to be fun. It's allowed to be relaxed. And that's precisely when the images appear that you'll still look at in ten years.

Why the old town is a gift for family portraits

Munich's old town isn't a sterile studio – it's alive. That's exactly what I like to bring into the frame. The narrow lanes around the Viktualienmarkt, the arches of the Hofgarten, quiet courtyards away from the tourist crowds: all of it gives you walls to lean on and corners to tuck into.

Children need movement and something to discover, and the old town offers both. While the little ones hop across the cobblestones or marvel at a fountain, I photograph – and nobody has to give a stiff smile to the lens.

  • Variety within short distances: Bright squares, shady lanes and green corners are often only minutes apart.
  • Character over backdrop: Old walls and warm light give the images depth without ever feeling staged.
  • Genuine atmosphere: The life around you puts everyone at ease – you're not alone on an empty stage.

Fun and relaxed: how the day stays light

The worry I hear most often: "We can't pose." Good – you shouldn't have to. I give you small tasks instead of stiff poses. Walk hand in hand for a bit, whisper something to each other, tickle your child, simply run away from me. Those little games are where the honest laughter comes from.

With children, only one thing works: no pressure

Children sense instantly when their parents are tense. That's why I never start a shoot with "everyone look here now." We take a little walk first, I get to know the kids, and the camera quietly becomes a normal companion.

Small breaks are part of it. A pretzel, a sip of water, a quick sit on a step – afterwards everyone is back in the game. For me, a family photoshoot in Munich's old town is more of a shared stroll through the city with a camera than an appointment.

My favourite spots for a family photoshoot in the old town

I never commit too rigidly to a route, but a few corners almost always work beautifully. Which ones we choose depends on your family, the weather and the time of day.

  • Hofgarten: Arcades and symmetry create calm, elegant images – lovely in midday sun, because the arches offer shade.
  • Lanes behind the Viktualienmarkt: Lively, charming, full of texture for easy walking shots.
  • Quiet courtyards: Perfect for close, gentle moments when the children need a pause.
  • Stairs and archways: Give structure and help arrange the family naturally.

If you're curious how different moods feel, take a look at my family photography gallery – there you'll see how varied families are in front of my camera. And if you fancy warm images in the green, the post about the family photoshoot in an apple orchard offers a completely different backdrop.

The best time for a family photoshoot

Light makes the biggest difference for me. I most love photographing in the first hour after sunrise or during the golden hour before sunset. The light is soft then, the old town quieter and the colours warm.

For families with small children, though, the children's rhythm matters more than perfect light. A well-rested, well-fed child late in the morning beats any golden hour with a tired mood. Together we'll find the time that fits your day.

What to wear and bring

You don't need to buy new outfits. You look loveliest in clothes you feel comfortable in and can move in.

  • Coordinated, not uniform: Choose two or three harmonising tones rather than identical clothing.
  • Calm colours: Muted and warm shades sit beautifully against the old façades.
  • Comfortable shoes: Cobblestones and children's pace are no friends of high heels.
  • Little helpers: A favourite toy, snacks and a drink take the pressure off.

If you're unsure, I'm happy to advise you before the session – that's part of my work. You can read more about how I work on the about me page.

How your family photoshoot with me unfolds

I'm less a director and more someone who wanders the old town with you and catches the lovely moments – the crooked laugh, the stumble, the little hug. If you like, you can combine the family shoot with a few couple portraits, as long as the kids are busy.
