Couple Photoshoot at Lake Geroldsee: One of Bavaria's Most Beautiful Spots
Lake Geroldsee near Garmisch is one of the most magical backdrops for a couple photoshoot in Bavaria. I share when, how and what to wear for the most beautiful images.

Some places you see just once and instantly know: this is where I want to photograph love. Lake Geroldsee, that small alpine lake near Krün in the Werdenfelser Land, is exactly that kind of place. When the Karwendel range mirrors in the still water and the last rays of sun brush across the meadows, a mood emerges that no studio in the world could ever recreate. That is why a couple photoshoot at Lake Geroldsee is, for me, one of the most beautiful experiences I can offer you in Bavaria.

What makes Lake Geroldsee so special?
Lake Geroldsee – some also know it as Wagenbrüchsee – sits nestled between lush alpine meadows and the rugged silhouette of the Karwendel mountains. This blend of openness and dramatic height is rare. In a small area you have water, forest, meadow and mountains – four entirely different visual worlds, without having to walk far.
What makes it so valuable photographically is its calm. Unlike many crowded hotspots, there is usually room here for genuine moments. And those are exactly what I look for: not staged poses, but the glance, the laugh, the small gesture between the two of you.
- Reflections: On a windless day the lake becomes a perfect mirror for the mountains.
- Variety: Wooden jetties, reeds, alpine meadows and a mountain panorama within a few hundred metres.
- Authenticity: The untouched nature tells a romantic story all on its own.

When is the best time of day for photos?
My clear recommendation: the golden hour. About an hour before sunset, the light bathes the meadows in a warm gold that makes skin glow and softens every harsh shadow. This time of day is made for a couple photoshoot at Lake Geroldsee.
The early morning is almost as beautiful. Those who rise early are rewarded with delicate wisps of mist over the water and absolute silence – and with a lake so smooth that the reflection turns flawless.
The harsh midday sun, on the other hand, is something I usually avoid. The light is hard and contrasty then, and the mountains look flat. If the schedule leaves no other option, we deliberately seek out the shaded edges of the forest.
Which season suits it best?
The honest answer: Lake Geroldsee is a gift in every season – simply with a completely different character each time.
Spring and summer
In late spring the alpine meadows bloom in full splendour and the fresh green is incredibly rich. Summer brings long, warm evenings and deep-blue water – ideal if you are after a lively, light-hearted mood.
Autumn and winter
Autumn is my personal favourite: golden larches, crisp air and a light that is almost impossibly pretty. Winter, in turn, transforms the landscape into a quiet, snow-covered fairy-tale scene – romantic, pared-back and perfect for an intimate shoot for two.

What clothing harmonises with the landscape?
Clothing can carry an image or distract from it – and at Lake Geroldsee that is especially true. My most important advice: choose calm, natural tones that blend with the landscape rather than compete with it.
- Earth tones and pastels: Cream, beige, sage green, rust, muted blue – they look timeless against mountain and water.
- Movement: A flowing dress or a long coat catches the wind and brings dynamism into the frame.
- Coordinate, don't match: Your outfits should harmonise, but not be identical. Two related colour worlds feel most cohesive.
- Leave out: Loud logos, bright neon and busy patterns pull attention away from what matters – you.
In spring, autumn and winter, do remember warm layers and sturdy footwear. The meadows are often damp, and no one smiles at ease into the camera while shivering.

Our favourite spots around Lake Geroldsee
Over the years I have grown especially fond of a few corners here. These are the places I almost always build into a shoot:
- The wooden jetty by the shore: Ideal for quiet, close moments with that perfect reflection behind you.
- The open alpine meadows: Here you can walk, dance, laugh – movement that looks real because it is real.
- The forest edge to the south: Soft, filtered light and a dreamy background for intimate portraits.
- The little wooden huts: A charming Bavarian detail that grounds your visual story.

If this natural setting speaks to you, take a look at my couple photography – there you can see how I work with light and landscape. If you prefer something elegant and architectural, the couple photoshoot at Nymphenburg Palace offers a lovely counterpoint. And for everyone who wants to capture their engagement, I have gathered the impressions from an engagement photoshoot in Munich.
Lake Geroldsee gives you what defines the most beautiful couple photos: time, calm and a backdrop that makes your story bigger.
