No registry office in the world feels as personal as a garden full of summer light, familiar faces and self-chosen words.

Choosing the Right Spot: Planning a Garden Wedding

Not every garden is automatically photogenic, and that's completely fine. Mood matters far more than perfectly trimmed lawn edges. I recommend visiting the location once at the same time of day the ceremony will take place.

Notice where the sun sits. A spot in dappled shade, or with the afternoon sun behind the guests, is ideal – no one squints and the light stays soft. Always have a plan B, too: a pavilion, a barn or large umbrellas can save the day when the Bavarian summer turns moody.

Decor Ideas for the Outdoor Ceremony

When it comes to garden wedding decor, my rule is: less, but with intention. Nature already provides colour and texture – your decor should complement it, not cover it.

The Floral Arch as the Centrepiece

At a garden wedding, the floral arch is the emotional and photographic heart. It frames you during the vows and quietly becomes the lead in nearly every image.

My tip: match the flower colours to the bridal bouquet and the surroundings. An asymmetric arch with eucalyptus, roses and a few grasses often looks more natural and modern than a fully closed wreath. Position it so that no parked cars or bins sneak into the background behind you.

Table, Chairs and the Small Details

Around the ceremony, it's the little things that make a garden wedding warm and personal:

• A pretty altar table with candles, a ring dish and your favourite flowers.
• Rows of borrowed wooden chairs, ideally with single flowering branches on the aisle seats.
• Handwritten signs, a hoop for the rings, a basket of parasols or fans for hot days.

Light Is Everything

The loveliest time for a garden wedding ceremony is the late afternoon. The sun sits lower, the light turns golden and the shadows go soft. Harsh midday sun, by contrast, creates deep eye shadows and glaring contrast.

Room for Real Emotion

My way of photographing is quiet and documentary. During the ceremony I stay in the background and capture reactions rather than staging them – the best man's tear, grandma's laughter, that glance just before you kiss.

To make that possible, it helps when guests keep their phones in their pockets during the ceremony. A gentle reminder from the celebrant works wonders – and your aisle stays free of outstretched smartphones.
